Catholic children’s author and screenwriter Frank Cottrell-Boyce has promised to promote reading for children from poor backgrounds as he was appointed the new Waterstones Children’s Laureate for 2024-26.
A long-time supporter of Catholic charities CAFOD, Pact and Mary’s Meals supporter, Frank is following in the footsteps of literary giants such as Julia Donaldson, Jacqueline Wilson, Michael Rosen, Quention Blake, Anne Fine, Malorie Blackman and Michael Morpurgo.
Millions, Frank’s debut children’s novel, won the CILIP Carnegie Medal and his other books include Cosmic, Framed, The Astounding Broccoli Boy, Sputnik’s Guide to Life on Earth, Runaway Robot, Noah’s Gold and The Wonder Brothers. He has also written scripts for Doctor Who.
The role of The Waterstones Children’s Laureate is awarded biannually to a renowned writer or illustrator in recognition of exceptional talent. The role celebrates creativity and storytelling, and promotes the right of every child to enjoy a lifetime of reading, books and stories.
Using the title Reading Rights: Books Build A Brighter Future, Frank Cottrell-Boyce, who devised the famous opening ceremony at the London 2012 Olympics. promised to address ‘invisible privilege and inequality’ during his tenure, enabling children born in poorer conditions to access books and reading.
“My tenure as Waterstones children’s laureate will have happiness at its heart but urgency in its step,” he said.
“It will be about calling for national provision so that, from their earliest years, every single child has access to books, to reading and the transformative ways in which they improve long-term life chances right from birth.
“It will be about campaigning for a visible sign that this country values its children, to show them that they are important, that they are in fact our only hope.”
Children’s Commissioner for England Dame Rachel de Souza welcomed the new role as an ‘inspired appointment’, whilst Kate Edwards, Chair of the Waterstones Children’s Laureate Steering Group and Chair of the Waterstones Children’s Laureate 2024-26 Judging Panel, said: “We couldn’t be more thrilled to welcome Frank to this prestigious role as the Laureateship celebrates its 25th anniversary – not only does his wonderful writing entertain and inspire, but he has long been a passionate voice in the campaign for children’s books to be given the value and recognition that they deserve.
“Frank is a wonderful Laureate for these times and the Steering Group is looking forward to working with him over the next two years, helping to bring his vital plans and ambitions to life so that every child can enjoy a life rich in books and reading.”
Frank’s appointment was also welcomed by Catholic leaders. Director of CAFOD Christine Allen said: “Massive congratulations to Frank Cottrell-Boyce who has been appointed Children’s Laureate. Brilliant choice and a powerful voice for children.”
