The news of the death of our beloved Queen Elizabeth has naturally been greeted by our members with much grief and sadness.
She epitomised the great values to which we all aspire: her selfless dedication to others, high integrity and commitment to her faith being the main ones in our minds. She was always there for her subjects..
I had the privilege of a very brief encounter with her in London when she was on one of her many walkabouts. It was by pure chance that the area was relatively quiet when her entourage passed by. Seeing a colleague and I standing to attention on the side, to allow them to pass, she immediately peeled away from her group, came over and, with a very nice smile, said “Good afternoon. How are you?”
It was a simple encounter with two of her subjects but a profound demonstration of her principles. It relayed her regal persona. Her key role, as she saw it, was to be a servant of all her subjects and be always approachable.
She read and responded quite often to letters appealing for help, and she ensured the pleas were sent to the appropriate bodies who could assist. She often made sure they were followed up and whether progress had been made.
During her reign she had many difficult issues to face, especially in latter years. They were dealt with calmly, encompassing careful thought with compassion but without favour. She extended courtesy to all and, whilst occasionally it must have been difficult to contain feelings, they were never portrayed. She was an exemplary leader and commanded respect from all.
And as Catenians we recognise one of her greatest attributes was the adherence to her faith. Her quiet focus on prayer and devotion to her God was always evident.
May our gracious late Queen rest in peace in the arms of our Lord
