Leading figures from CAFOD and youth ministry have led tributes to Father Dermott Donnelly, who died suddenly on 8th July after a short illness, calling him a ‘standout star’ of youth ministry.
Father Dermott was one of the founders of the pioneering Youth Ministry Team from the diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, who posted this heartfelt tribute:
“It is with deep sadness to let you know that the director for Youth Services and our founder Fr Dermott Donnelly passed away yesterday afternoon,” they wrote, also sharing a powerful spiritual reflection which ‘was played several times at his bedside as his family and loved ones gathered around him.’
Father Dermott also worked closely with CAFOD, who called him a ‘great friend.’
“We are hugely saddened to hear of the death of Fr Dermott Donnelly, a great friend of CAFOD who witnessed a burning passion and commitment to the fullness of life for all,” Monica Conmee, CAFOD Head of Education, said.
“Fr Dermott chose to stand in the light, and through his immense talent and gifts, so generously guided thousands of young people to experience the love and light of God in their own lives, inspiring them to share this with others.”
Father Dermott helped pioneer the groundbreaking FLAME events at Wembley Arena, gathering young people from across the country for powerful faith experiences, to which Monica Conmee referred.
“Unforgettable mountain-top moments for so many young Catholics were the Flame events at Wembley Arena, of which Dermott was a guiding light and a driving force,” she said.
“We are hugely privileged to have worked closely with Fr Dermott enabling the voices of the poor and most vulnerable to be heard. Fr Dermott will shine brightly forever. May the angels come to greet one of their own.”
Father Dermott was also a key player in the development of CYMFed, the Catholic youth ministry federation, which seeks to promote, support and highlight youth ministry on a national level in the UK.
